In the heart of the enchanting rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes through the solo tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Tales of wild beasts prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but found no beast.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. However, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, click here no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once broken, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
